Professor Gary Sacks will share headline results from a new report that rates Australia’s four major supermarkets on their nutrition policies and practices. This study is a much-anticipated update from the release of the first evaluation results in 2018 and his presentation will include:

  • A scorecard (with results out of 100) for each of the supermarket chains, across key domains related to population nutrition
  • An overview of the performance of Australian supermarkets, including changes since 2018 and a comparison to current global best-practice
  • Recommendations for improvement for retailers, in areas related to corporate strategy, product affordability and availability, promotion practices, and in-store strategies to promote healthier selections
  • Wider recommendations for sector-wide improvements that would see supermarkets better contribute to improving population health.

The online launch will include an introduction from RE-FRESH: Next Generation CIA Professor Adrian Cameron on the purpose of this kind of monitoring and evaluation, and how it fits into the centre’s wider research strategy to improve the healthiness of Australia’s retail food environments.

RE-FRESH: Next Generation is a member of the Collaboration for Enhanced Research Impact (CERI).
