Inside our supermarkets: Assessment of the healthiness of Australian supermarkets
Unhealthy diets are a major
public health issue in Australia.
Along with obesity, the unhealthy
diets of many Australians are
leading contributors to poor
health, and have a high cost to
the economy.
Excess consumption of food and beverages such as chocolate, confectionery, chips and soft drinks is a key driver of unhealthy diets.
In this study, we assessed the degree to which the in-store environments within major Australian supermarket chains (Coles, Woolworths, ALDI and independent stores) promote healthy eating, and how this varies according to the level of socioeconomic disadvantage of the area in which the stores were located.
