Professor James Smith is both the Deputy Dean of Rural and Remote Health, Northern Territory, and Mathew Flinders Professor in Health and Social Equity at Flinders University. James is a member of the Prevention Centre’s Scientific Advisory Committee, having made a significant contribution to the area of Indigenous-focused health and education research. He has held senior executive roles in government and non-government contexts in urban and remote settings across the Northern Territory.
At Flinders University, James’s research interests include Aboriginal social and emotional wellbeing, Aboriginal social determinants of health, health equity and health promotion, higher education, Indigenous education, Indigenous health and men’s health.
James is a Fellow and Life Member of the Australian Health Promotion Association (AHPA), and past Editor-in-Chief of the Health Promotion Journal of Australia. He is also a Fellow of the Australasian College of Health Service Management. He also holds editorial appointments for international health and education journals, including the International Journal of Men’s Social and Community Health. He has been an Expert Advisor to the World Health Organization and holds honorary university appointments in Australia, Canada, and the United States.
