The Australian Prevention Partnership Centre

Describe your role in one or two sentences: My role as Program Manager is to administer all research activities, ensure budgets and milestones are on target, liaise with universities and researchers, and pre-empt the Deputy Director’s every request.

The most challenging part is … coming back to public health after five years working as a medical lawyer in the corporate world. Researchers and universities need more flexibility.

The best part of my role is … having the time to think through challenging issues without having to bill every six minutes.

I like working for the Prevention Centre because … in the current political climate where preventive health has been put last on the list of health priorities, we have a chance to shine.

At work I am always learning that … my wonderful colleagues are the most important people around me.

Before my current position, my most memorable role was … singing in the Australian Opera with Dame Joan Sutherland in the Merry Widow.

Most people don’t know that … when I left school, I spent a year as a jillaroo on a 120,000 acre sheep property at Tilpa on the Darling River between Bourke and Cobar in far-west NSW. Oh, and my first publication was in the British Medical Journal – sadly it’s been all downhill since then!

When I’m not working, I enjoy … spending time with my daughters Isabella and Marlena (not always reciprocated by my gorgeous teenagers).

I would tell my 16-year-old self … to learn as many musical instruments and languages as possible before you’re 21.

The person I would most like to meet is … jazz pianist Chick Corea because I only ever see him on the Concert Hall stage and that’s too far away. What a brilliant musician.

The talent I would most like to have is … to be able to play the piano and sing duets with Vince Jones at the Basement.

My motto is … it feels good to be lost in the right direction.

I try to stay healthy by … not drinking too much, walking to work and swimming at Manly with the Bold and the Beautiful Swim Squad as often as I can.
